"September 11: One Year On - The Homecoming"

Below is an excerpt from The Times Magazine (London), September, 2002

Down the street, Laura Jewell, a marketing executive, was also organising a fund-raising activity. Jewell - who worked on the 72nd floor of the WTC in the Eighties - lost two of her neighbours, and she found she could not concentrate on work or even her two beloved dogs: she had to do something. "The world stood still, but around here, you couldn't stand still," she says. "Husbands did not come home. Sons and daughters did not come home."

So Jewell convinced all her neighbours and local businesses to clean out their attics and garages. She staged an elaborate car-boot sale and a silent auction. She sold sailboats and tickets to restaurants. She raised $20,000 for the victims' families.
